Refuel with Chocolate Milk
Crazy right? Who would have thought?!
Chocolate milk has double the carbohydrate and protein content in comparison to real milk, water, and a sports drink- which is ideal for replenishing muscles after a workout.
Many coaches of all aged-sports teams from volleyball, soccer, to even football and basketball are keeping chocolate milks in their teams coolers to give their athletes after a game instead of gatorade or bottles of water.
Research also has been shown that chocolate milk has a high water content which replaces the fluids you lost while sweating, therefore preventing dehydration. Additionally, it includes the calcium, sodium, and sugar which assists with retaining water and gaining back that energy making one feel re-energized.
If you compared drinking chocolate milk to just drinking water you’d still replenish the water loss with plain water, but you would not replace the calcium, sodium, or sugars that are used during exercise that chocolate milk offers.
According to a professor of kinesiology, Joel Stager, at Indiana University who has written several papers on milk for sports performance recovery, “The ratio to aim for is 4 grams of carbohydrates to 1 gram of protein” which is found in chocolate milk.
With all that said, I just finished hitting legs at the gym so I am going to go enjoy this glass of chocolate milk to refuel my body!
